You can ask people to examine their privilege in any tone you like. They won’t listen. Generally speaking, people don’t want to hear about and try to empathize with the experiences of others if it means they have to shift any part of their views about themselves. People don’t care about being good people; they care about preserving their image of themselves as good people. The latter can only be accomplished by finding excuses not to listen to what [member of marginalized group X] has to say — whether it’s X’s tone, X’s inability to pick his battles, or any number of the other reasons bandied about on a regular basis. We can blame ourselves for others’ lack of compassion, but at the end of the day, the issue is precisely what someone articulated last week: “[A]nyone who makes your tone a prerequisite for endorsing a social movement for your equality may not have your best interest at heart.” And why would they, when they see “our” interest as being in diametric opposition to their own?
Right on.
Google raises a very good point.
